i would highly recommend a trip to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio whenever you get the chance.
i know i learned the “basics” about the history of slavery and the Underground Railroad somewhere throughout the elementary and middle school years…but this was remindful.
The exhibits are fantastic and very beautifully displayed.
Funny Story: this girl almost threw up on my toes. She turned around while we were at the reconstructed-from-original-materials-slave-pen, and she looked like she was going to be sick. i saw the life of my favorite Rainbow-brand flip-flops flash before my eyes.and if she would have thrown up on me (i’m gagging as i type) – i would have simply demanded the $55 to replace them.
shallow, i know, in the midst of learning about the history of slavery in the US and how slavery still exists today in many other forms. And i’m just worried about my flip-flops. however, you didn't see the look of "i'm-really-going-to-puke" in her eyes and i did.
in my defense, i'm not that shallow though.
i learned a lot of good things and felt really helpless when i realized that an estimated 27 million people worldwide are enslaved today – in one form or another. their website is pretty cool though, you should visit.
Kind of puts things into perspective (save my treasured flip-flops).
