is it just me....or.....

is it socially unacceptable to use the handicap stall in a public restroom?
i SWEAR that around the already-tough-enough middle school years, i saw an Oprah episode where she was signaling some sort of crack-down message to all public toilet users that this was NOT okay.
and by whose standards? (hers probably)
but still, is it okay to use this stall when it's open and you just have to pee real quickly and it doesn't appear that anyone who needs all the extra room will be coming in anytime in the next minute?
the jury is still out.

I ask myself this same question every time I take my three year old to the bathroom. It's much easier for me to use the handicap stall so we're not crammed in a regular stall. The only thing that ends up making me not feel guilty about it is in a lot of the restaurants the handicap stall is where they have the diaper changing station.

I get really irritated when I have two screaming kids and we are waiting for this ONE person who is taking so long in the handicapped stall. That is usually where the baby changing station is and the only one we can fit in.

But if I were by myself and the handicapped is the only one open, I would totally go in there.

So I guess I'm a hypocrite. :)

I say use the handicap stall.

If you see someone who obviously needs it (someone with needs or with two children as quiet oasis said)...then offer it to them.

Quiet Oasis - So true! My standards are the same as yours - basically double standards. :) I do use the handicap stall, for myself and when I have Little R. with me.

I definitely try to see if anyone else might need it before I use it, though.

Agree....if no one else is in need of it I say use it.

i use it. without shame.

i used it when i was pregnant all the time. Why, you ask? becase by about month 8, you cannot really fit in the "regular" stall -- especially if the door swings in to open. so, used the "honeymoon suite" of stalls.

now, i use it if (1) the changing table is in there [and really, how stupid is that? or (2) if the 4 year old needs to go -- much more room to 'work' with the kid, or (3) if it's the only one open.

I think the handicapped stall is there for when someone who is handicapped needs to go to the bathroom, otherwise it's open to everyone. I don't think it's forbidden to use it on a normal occassion, it's not for handicapped people only.
