when is it that people become more assertive? are some people born this way...or do we just turn this way after several years of adulthood when we HAVE to deal with everything on our own? i didn't used to consider myself all that assertive, and I was a very far cry from outright rude. Lately though, especially in the realm of cars and bills, I surprise myself in the level of assertiveness that I, well, assert.
so, is this a nature or a nurture type of thing? Or, better yet, is it a form of social conditioning?
although i don't aspire to become "that rude person" in EVERY seemingly unfair consumeristic interaction, i can't help but feel like i'm evolving in this way.

One can be assertive without being rude. Good for you for sticking up for yourself. Call me Gloria Steinem, but when women are assertive people perceive that as being rude or "bitchy." Assert!
I never use to be assertive, infact I let people kinda walk over me. But that has changed over the past few years. I will be assertive when I need to, but not to the point where I am rude.
For me T. does have a bit of an influence as he can be assertive. I think he has made me more assertive and I have calmed him down a bit. But I also think now I work hard and don't want to be taken advantage of and if it means speaking my mind then so be it.
Maybe even the blogging thing has been an influence. It is a place where you can speak your mind and not hold back! :)
