May I have the language of origin?

being a former [5th grade elementary school] spelling bee champion myself, i find it important to note that the Scripps National Spelling Bee is currently taking place in Washington DC.

the first winning word in 1925 was gladiolus. seems simple enough. 1948 was psychiatry. 1956 was condominium.

flash forward to this century - 2001 was succedaneum (which mozilla firefox is telling me i spelled wrong! no word comes close in the spell check). 2004 was autochthonous (again, mozilla is not recognizing this word).

i feel that our national spelling bee has come quite a long way in terms of level of difficulty, no?

to see all of the years and their winning words - go here.

I heart spelling! And I love spelling bees. There's a corporate one around here that I've participated in 4 times.

I just love watching those kids. Talk about stressed!

We LOVE watching the National Spelling Bee!!

(Was it you that was telling us about the winner one year that kept saying, "Put it on my head"? Do you know what I'm talking about??)

yes, Dri. my brother and i often made jokes about the young lady who won with the word "euonym". she, for some reason, wanted to balance the very heavy looking trophy on her head. she was very Mary Katherine Gallagher like.

hahahahahaha. I'm laughing about the "put it on my head."

I nearly cried when Sidharth spelled his word incorrectly.

He was a shoe-in.
