Say hello to my friend, the fig

My friends with whom I stay for 1/2 the week always have projects going on. Art, homemade soap, honey from their beehives, canning veggies or freezing them (from their huge garden of course), making jam, and on and on.

It is, in essence, the house you always wanted to have a slumber party at....

Mini-Mary: Do you want to have a slumber party?
Mini-Me: Sure. Whose house should we stay at?
M-Mary: We could stay at yours, since we always stay at mine....
M-Me: Uh, we can't, because, uh, my dog has a cold, errrr something...
M-Mary: Okay, we can stay at mine and...
M-Me: ....And do a PROJECT?!?!! Sweet!!!

Anyway, the slumber party delivered once again this week in the form of figs from their fig tree.

We made a jalapeƱo/fig spicy jelly. Think of using it as a marinade on a pork loin or serving over cream cheese with crackers. It is sweet at first then pretty fiery on the aftertaste.

We got to work next on fig honey jam with walnuts. I have yet to sample this one except for while it was still warm, but it was delicious and we envision it on warm biscuits or a few tablespoons over oatmeal.

And for our next trick, we will go international with our game and take over the world!! the documentary of our success will begin in Mary's kitchen where we chuckle at how small our operation used to be "back in the day". then we'll switch over to our massive Canadian factory where we are in paper coveralls and hairnets. we'll use only the finest figs from the Greek isles and we will be swimming in money.

below: a portrait that shall henceforth be named Humble Beginnings

I miss you. :)

Also, I am intrigued by figs. Just, like, in general.

1) how cool that she has a fig tree.

2) I have never had a fig (because I don't really think you can fully count fig newtons as a genuine fig). I have always wanted to try one!

3) It sounds like you are having so much fun, that is awesome!

So awesome. I wouldn't know what to do with a fig. Ever.

I do, however, enjoy a good fig newton.
